Reminiscent
Artist Statement 2019
Memories are a funny thing. We have moments we love that bring us joy and others that bring pain. We can remember or selectively block portions of our history. A smell or a song can transport us back 20 years in a split second. A piece of clothing can trigger the memory of a special date or embarrassing moment. Even more amazing, our minds can skew or distort how memories are replayed. We can remember only the good and find ourselves longing for a better time, when the best time might indeed be now.
As my children have grown up all too fast, I find myself drawn to old objects: the reflections of a camera, the worn laces of a shoe, the legos and origami pieces my kids used to leave on the floor. In my paintings of everyday objects, I use these silent items to tell stories all people can relate to through symbolism and share nostalgia of a different time.
Artist Bio 2019
Blanche Guernsey grew up in Gillette, WY with a passion for art that continues today. As a self-taught artist, her medium of choice used to be pastels but as she experimented with other mediums she has found a fondness for oils. Her passion for people and family is evident in her early work, inspired mostly by her husband and five children. Blanche has evolved into an artist that uses nostalgic objects, bold colors and the playful shadows. As an introvert, Blanche has many levels and this is reflected in her work. A painting of a simple object becomes a way to share feelings and experiences from her own life and of those around her.
Blanche is currently represented by AVA Community Art Center and Wyoming Art and Frame in Gillette, WY, Scarlows Gallery in Casper, WY, SAGE in Sheridan, WY, and the DAHL in Rapid City, SD.
